How to use Instagram Insights to Boost Your Engagement

Reading Time: 5 minutes

Instagram Insights is a powerful Instagram feature that you should be using to increase your account’s engagement rate. It can also tell you when your audience is most active which in turn tells you when you should be posting.

By simply analyzing your Instagram Insights it becomes very clear what types of Instagram posts perform best and which ones don’t, allowing you to craft more engaging content in the future.

The more engaging your Instagram content, the higher number of likes and comments you’ll receive on each post, boosting your overall Instagram account engagement rate (likes + comments + saves + shares/follower count).

Not only will this help boost engagement on past posts but it will also create better-performing Instagram posts moving forward and help you reach more of your audience.

This article will cover several Instagram Insights tips you can use immediately to boost your account’s engagement rate. These insights will help you craft Instagram posts that attract audiences’ attention better and drive them directly towards your website.

Now let’s take a look at each Instagram Insight so you can get started right away!

How to Access Instagram Insights

First thing’s first. You’ll need to know how to access Instagram Insights in order to take advantage of the full feature and use Instagram Insights to boost Instagram engagement rates.

Instagram Insights is a free Instagram feature that allows you (and any business on Instagram or creators/influencers) to analyze your Instagram account performance over time. Accessing Instagram Insights is simple as it’s located within the Instagram app itself, just look for the “Insights” tab below your bio on your home page.

The Basics of Instagram Insights

Instagram Insights Overview

Once you have opened up Instagram insights you will see a number of various statistics related to your Instagram account after scrolling down. This includes accounts reached, content interactions, total followers, and information on the content you posted, and promotions that have been made in the selected time frame.

You can look at your Instagram Insights for the past week, 2 weeks, 30 days, and now most recently 60 days.

You’ll see some of the information is clickable. For example, if you click on accounts reached, you will be brought to a whole new tab with even more detailed information.

The best way to learn is hands-on so dive in, click buttons, and really look at the information that’s presented to you!

3 Ways to Use Insights to Boost Engagement

1. Learning Your Demographics

Instagram demographics is an Instagram Insights feature that can help give you a better idea about your audience and their interests. Here’s a quick breakdown of Instagram’s different user demographics:

  • Age: The age range of Instagram users.
  • Gender: The gender split between male & female Instagram accounts.
  • Location: You can see which countries the majority of your followers reside in and even the top cities.

By analyzing your demographics, you are then able to craft Instagram posts more tailored towards specific users. For example, if most of your audience is based in the UK would it make sense to make an Independence Day post…? Probably not. Review who your audience is, determine their problems and decide how you solve them. If you haven’t already, be sure to build a buyer persona or two!

2. See When Your Audience is Active

Instagram Insights allows you to learn when users are active on Instagram. By viewing your audience insights, you will know what days post best for your Instagram account, how often you should be posting, and when to post.

Here’s how you get there: Insights> Tap “Total Followers”>scroll all the way to the bottom to “Most Active Times”

There you will be able to see the most active days and times for posting.

By analyzing when your current Instagram followers are using Instagram, you can schedule posts around these times to your advantage and increase engagement on future posts.

For example, if most of your Instagram followers are 18-24 years old then it would make sense to schedule Instagram posts during school hours (between 8 am – 2 pm) rather than when later in the day.

Another example would be Instagram posts in the morning might be geared towards a broad audience as you are more likely to get Instagram users who have time to engage on Instagram during their commute. But Instagram posts at night might be better directed towards those Instagram users who are most likely living an active lifestyle just past 6 or 7 pm.

The key here is that when you really analyze your Instagram Insights, you’re able to craft Instagram stories that will resonate better with your specific Instagram demographic. This can help drive higher engagement rates and overall sales for businesses looking to increase followers and revenue using Instagram.

3. Discover What Posts Receive the Most Engagement

If Instagram Insights is used correctly it can help Instagram marketers learn what types of posts are most likely to yield the greatest amount of engagement and why.

Businesses, brands, and Influencers can then tailor future Instagram content towards these trends. For example, Instagram users may notice that images with a certain color scheme seem to perform better than others or that Instagram photos taken in the morning tend to perform much better than those posted at night— Instagram insights can show you all this information and more!

Here’s how:

  1. Open Instagram Insights and scroll down to  “Content You Shared” and click on posts (this can be done for any other type of content as well).
  2. Now you will see all of your posts. There is three drop-down menus to allow you to look at more in-depth information.

The second drop-down menu will allow you to look at:

  • Business Address Taps
  • Call Button Taps
  • Comments
  • Email Button Taps
  • Follows
  • Impressions
  • Likes
  • Post Interactions
  • Profile Visits
  • Reach
  • Saves
  • Shares
  • Text Button Taps
  • Video Views
  • Website Taps

You can choose from the following time periods to analyze:

  • Last 7 Days
  • Last 30 Days
  • Last 3 Months
  • Last 6 Months
  • Last Year
  • Last 2 Years

By now you can see how granular you can get with your data and discovery. We would recommend looking at what content gets the most post interactions, saves, and shares. That will give you an idea of what your audience is loving.

Not Sure if Instagram is For You?

Instagram is a great platform for e-commerce entrepreneurs because Instagram users are proven to be more engaged and click through Instagram links significantly more often than other social networks. The more engagement you have the more trust your audience has in you which means they are more likely to convert into customers.

In fact, Instagram has over six million business profiles, which is more than double the number of businesses that use Pinterest!

Remember that by learning about the demographics of your followers, when they are most active on their social media channels and analyzing past content, you may be able to discover what posts get the highest engagement. These three tips will ensure that your next post is a hit!
